The Big Tree Game: An Adventure Girl Hide & Seek
Think about this….. a seek-and-find game of the giants in the temperate forests of the Shuswap. Sounds amazing right?
The largest known trees in BC are documented and GPS’d; many are accessible for you and me to find! Now I have a new mission.
A long-time adventure friend Sarah R., an RFP (Registered Forest Professional), and I set out to find the biggest known Western Hemlock in the North Fork/ Perry River area between Sicamous and Revelstoke.
What’s so neat is that we found it! We had its GPS location, tracked it, and set off through the bush. Wandering through this impressive stand of old Hemlock, a 400+-year-old stand, and there she was…. You know when you see it too. It’s like a shrine in the forest beaming with beauty, noticeably larger than the others, a crown of the wild and so tall that you can’t really comprehend it.
So how do we find these trees? Well, UBC has a website called the Big Tree Registry which is jam-packed with quality and useful information about trees and where to find the big wood.
Recently I went to a book talk on Big Trees, and the super passionate author and forever big tree seeker and surveyor, Terry Nelson, has a new book that gives you info on these giants plus coordinates. The Shuswap is heavily featured in this book.
Happy Tree Hugging!
